Unconditional Love

Growing up as a little girl I always imagined what it was like to be in love or to fall in love with someone. My favorite movie was the Titanic, I was a hopeless romantic and loved a good love story. And then I grew up and found Jesus and learned what true love really was. Which by total surprise I was shocked. It wasn’t this fairy tail love story with rose petals and butterflies all the time. It was actually the total opposite. I had a conversation with someone recently that mentioned they wanted to be in a relationship but they admitted to being very selfish.

And then I thought can you be selfish and truly love someone at the same time? My initial answer is no. But let’s take a look.

Selfish means to lack consideration for other people. You’re only concerned with the profit and pleasure of your own self and not for others. When the scripture says the total opposite: Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit rather in humility value others better than yourselves. Not looking to your own interest but each of you to the interest of others. ( Philippians 2:3 )This scripture is an example of love in action. Love put to action is service. Serving one another. Taking other people into consideration. Jesus gave us two commandments after his death: (1) To love the lord God with all your heart, mind and soul, (2) and to love your neighbor as yourself.

You have to understand God is love. And it's only God’s love that can complete you. When you are filled with God’s love and the fruits of his spirt it’s easy to show love to others. When your filled with God’s love it means your cup is full and not empty and so you have enough love to give to others. Knowing that as you serve others God will provide for you. God blesses you so that you can bless other people. Thats why it’s so important for you to serve. All Jesus did was serve other people. For that is true love. It’s unconditional. You don't fall in and out of love with people. It’s not based on how you feel but it’s accepting someone flaws and all and not judging because the bible says judge and you will be judged. I struggled with this area for quite sometime. My love was conditional only based on what you could do for me at the time or how I felt in the moment, and then God showed me myself and how selfish and judgmental I was in my relationships so it’s something that I continue to work on daily.

Here are four tips that can help you maintain unconditional love:

1. Develop your own personal relationship with God. It's much easier to show love when your filled with God’s love. When your not filled with God’s love that is when selfishness tends to arise. ( Review my previous blogs on how to develop your own relationship with God).

2. Pray and ask God to help you love people the way he loves people.

3. Practice taking other people into consideration, even if it’s just as simple as holding the door for someone, or letting someone in your lane while your driving.

3. In your relationships personal or intimate, serve them. If your planning on getting married marriage is service serving one another. So if your single practice this now with your family members: mom, dad, grandparents, and even children. If you are in a relationship learn to become more of a servant to your spouse.
