The scriptures say to “humble yourself before the lord and he will lift you up.” (James 4:10). It's clear that humility is needed in order for you to reach the next level. According to webster dictionary a humble person is showing a low estimate of one’s own importance. God can not elevate you if you’re constantly putting yourself and your own needs before God and others. Humility is when you don't do things so that everyone can see but you do things unto God knowing that your blessings do not come from people they come from God, so you seek to please God in all your ways. Not to seek validation and recognition from other people.

The first thing that came to mind when writing this article was Beyonce’s song “I got a big ego.” And I wanted to breakdown a person who has big ego from a biblical perspective. According to webster dictionary an ego is a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance. A person who has an ego is constantly seeking validation from other people because they do things for attention. They need people to tell them they are doing a good job because they need to feel important. Before God was able to use me one of the first things he did was humble me. He had to get the attention off of myself and on to him.

You see when you're secure with your identity and who you are you won’t need an ego. You won’t need to feed your ego by doing things so people can constantly tell you that your pretty or for a pat on the back. The security kills the ego. It’s the word of God and your relationship with God that gives you security. You won’t need to seek attention and approval from other people to make your self feel important when you’re filled with God’s love. You can’t be secure with yourself and insecure with yourself at the same time. You can’t have an ego and be humble at the same time.

A humble person recognizes that it’s not about you, how you feel, and making yourself feel important but it’s about happily serving others knowing that your blessings do not come from people but from God. You are not striving to please people but striving to please God. You see when your living a life for Jesus it’s no longer about you. It’s about bringing God the Glory knowing that he is your provider and he will supply all your needs.

It’s important that as God elevates you that you figure out a way to stay low. You should always be desperate for God even in our times of abundance. Knowing that we did not get this far on our own and the very attitudes that put us in a position to receive his blessings are also the same attitudes that keep us in those positions.

Here are four tips that will help you to remain humble:

1. Serve. All Jesus did was serve. Get in the habit of serving other people. If you don’t have time to volunteer then start with your household with your mom or children. Our families are our first ministries.

2. Pray on your knees. Praying on your knees keeps you low before God.

3. Start your day with asking God for direction. Example prayer: ”Lord this is no longer my day but I give this day back to you. For whatever your will is let it be done.”

4. Check your motives behind your actions. Ask yourself is this about me or God right now? And remember it’s not about you it’s about bringing God the Glory.
