Protecting what enters your heart is important on your journey toward personal development and spiritual growth. The scriptures say “Above all else guard your heart for everything you do flows from it." (Proverbs 4:23) Whatever you place on the inside of you will eventually come out on the outside of you. That is why the word says you have to guard your heart because everything you do flow from it.
For example for a long time I struggled with listening to rap music and asked why do I have to cut rap music out my life? It does not take away the love I have for God and It’s not a sin to listen to rap music. But during my walk as I grew closer to God he started convicting me in my spirit. It was unhealthy for me especially as a new believer to listen to cursing, shooting, and music degrading woman and bringing glory to things and attitudes that goes against God’s love and righteousness.
And then I transitioned to listening to just R&B music. And then I read this scripture. “Because you are lukewarm, neither hot or cold-I am about to spit you out my mouth." (Revelation 3:16) You see, you have to realize if you are not listening to music that glorifies God you’re listening to music that glorifies something else, weather its adultery, a man, success, power, revenge. There is no in between or gray areas, If you are wondering why you have thoughts of cheating, lust, greed, and you're wondering where those negative thoughts are coming from. I can tell you they are coming from your music and your tv shows, which create false realities on love, on success, and natural progression. Now as I mentioned before it’s not that it’s a sin to listen to this kind of music but be aware as your you're singing along the words you're planting seeds in your heart and whats in us comes out of us. Those seeds will eventually grow and will turn into actions.
As you continue to mature and evolve it’s important that you are aware of what is feeding your spirit. What are you consuming? What are you listening to? What are you watching? Whatever you put in front of your face that is what you’ll desire. There is no in between or gray areas. If you're not filled with the Holy Spirit then your filled with other spirits.
Guarding you heart is being aware of what you watch on television, what kind of music you listen to, being aware of the environments and people you choose to surround yourself with. It takes discipline and maturity but it’s needed for you to reach your next level.
Here are four tips to help you guard your heart:
1. Learn to qualify your actions. Ask yourself are you glorifying your flesh or God right now? (Asking myself this question always helps to put me back on track)
2. Examine your thoughts. Are your thoughts coming from the TV show you just watched last night or are they coming from God? Remember negative thoughts do not come from God. When negative thoughts do arise submit those thoughts to the word of God.
3. Surround yourself with quality people, people who are upholding the same standard you're striving to reach and hold each other accountable.
4. Learn to want what God has for you. We can be so full of ourselves and not full of God. If you feed your spirit the word of God your flesh will become strong enough to act in alignment with the word of God.
